Carrying weight that was never yours to hold

For those who grew up in families where love was expressed through achievement, where your worth felt conditional on how well you performed, how little you needed, and how seamlessly you translated a world your parents couldn't fully navigate. As a therapist who works in both English and 普通话, I understand how culture, language, and family history shape what we learned to carry, and what healing can look like.

The long echoes of growing up fast

The parentified child

You may have served as a language broker, cultural interpreter, or emotional anchor for your parents, all before you had the language to name your own needs. Filling out forms, translating at the doctor's office, managing a parent's moods: being needed in this way can leave little room to simply be a child.

Love through sacrifice, not attunement

In families where survival was the primary focus, emotional attunement wasn't always available. Love arrived through sacrifice and provision rather than through being truly seen. Over time, this shapes how you see yourself: someone who earns connection, who performs their worth, who doesn't quite know how to simply exist.

Complex PTSD

Complex PTSD from this kind of chronic relational environment can look like perfectionism, people-pleasing, difficulty trusting your own emotions, harsh self-criticism, or a persistent sense of not belonging anywhere: not fully here, not fully there. These patterns once kept you safe. They don't have to keep running your life.

Grieving, understanding, rebuilding

A space that holds both

Therapy offers room to grieve what wasn't given and to understand what was inherited, without having to blame or abandon your family. Many clients hold deep love and real hurt at the same time; both can be true here.

Working with the body and its parts

Using Somatic IFS, we get to know the parts of you that learned to over-function, stay quiet, or keep everyone else okay. With EMDR, we can help old memories settle so they stop shaping the present. Slowly, you build a relationship with yourself that isn't conditional.

Where culture and neurodivergence meet

I'm especially passionate about working with high-functioning autistic and ADHD adults in BIPOC and immigrant communities, where being highly capable on the outside can mask how much is being carried underneath. Read more about autism and ADHD.
