Listening to the body as much as the mind

Many of the people I work with already understand their patterns intellectually. They can explain exactly why they overthink, people-please, or shut down, and yet the patterns keep happening. That's because these patterns don't only live in our thoughts; they live in the nervous system. Somatic therapy works with the body directly, helping you notice, understand, and gently shift what's being held there, so that insight can finally become felt change.

Meeting the parts of you

Many parts, one Self

Internal Family Systems (IFS) understands the psyche as made up of many parts, each with its own perspective, history, and role it learned to play to keep you safe. The part that criticizes you harshly. The part that never stops pushing. The part that pulls away when things get close. None of these parts are your enemy. They are trying to protect something tender.

Where parts live in the body

Somatic IFS adds the body to this work. We don't just think about your parts; we notice where they live in you: a tightness in the chest, a heaviness in the shoulders, a held breath. The body often holds what the mind can't yet put into words, and learning to listen to it is a profound form of self-knowledge.

Letting the Self lead

Over time, this work invites the deepest part of you, what IFS calls the Self, to lead. Not by suppressing or managing your parts, but by turning toward them with curiosity and care. The inner landscape shifts: less internal war, more spaciousness. Less performing, more simply being.

Who somatic work helps

You might be drawn to this if…

You feel that words alone haven't been enough. You notice parts of yourself in conflict, like the part that wants to rest and the part that won't let you. You live with anxiety, triggers, or overwhelm that seem to bypass your thinking mind. You're carrying complex trauma, or the long tiredness of masking as a neurodivergent adult.

What a session looks like

Sessions are a mix of talking and slowing down to notice. I might invite you to pause on a feeling, sense where it shows up in your body, or get curious about the part that's reacting. Nothing is forced, and you stay in charge of the pace. Somatic work can be done in person in Brooklyn Heights or virtually.

How it fits with other approaches

I integrate Somatic IFS with EMDR and psychodynamic Gestalt therapy, and my training includes a certificate in Somatic Embodiment & Regulation (SER), a body-based trauma approach. For simple ways to start working with your nervous system on your own, see my Resourcing page.
